A Round up of Nigerian Rock Music in 2014

Compliment of the season readers, we hope you and yours the very best of the yuletide. May we all be good, gooder and goodest as we celebrate xmas to the fullest.
In our article around this time last year, on The Journey of Nigerian Rock Music, (So Far), we anticipated and professed a greater glory for the Nigerian rock fans and bands in the year 2014 and beyond. The year has actually turned out to be one where beautiful melodic songs have been churned out from bands and  have gone through our ear holes and given us that air of better things to come in less time, and in contrast to what we all anticipated would take at least 10 years to sit well within us. The year did not just start on the right note but on a rather augmented one, with the Metal and Romance rock concert/party which took place in early January in Lagos, then to the #LoveRocks valentine concert in Enugu to the Rock with XTsamurai gig, not to forget the Rock Alive concert which somehow seems to be the biggest that took place. We’ve seen a good number of rock concerts (not the Star trek rock concert featuring Wizkid, Phyno and co) but concerts featuring real rock bands and artists with “No Jollof Music” or “NO Djs” but heavy, overdriven and distorted guitar riffs, growls, drum rolls, screams, all on underlying melodic guitar or piano chords.
If the history of Nigerian rock music is to ever be written, it would be right to say that it actually started from this year. As much as the quality of live rock performance in Nigeria took a step further, the quality and quantity of songs released this year alone is worth setting up an award ceremony for the genre.  Almost every song released this year has its own unique flavor, sound, lyrical depth/delivery and unique technicality. We can of-course quite comfortably create a playlist of both foreign and local rock songs and listen to the local songs more often than not which in itself tells us of a genre that is ready to break bounds  in the country and stand on the hills of its own creation. We’ve compiled every one of them here for our readers including their download links, if you missed any, find them here and give your ears the perfect xmas present.
*Note: They are not sorted in any order.

With the force all the bands and emerging ones are putting into the music, 2015 will be an even better year. At-least four to five albums will be dropping next year from bands like Threadstone, FootPrint5, The RisingRain, Zainab Sule, and Clay as well as singles from the newly signed band, Nathmac and The Lime and we are all looking forward to all of them.
Finally, this would be the perfect moment to add this. The first ever confluence of almost all the rock bands and artist as well as emerging rock bands in Nigeria will be taking place next year on the 3rd of January, 2015 at the Metal and Romance: Dominance rock party/concert at Bheer and Hugz Lounge, City Mall, Ikeja, Lagos. It’s definitely a concert of its own kind you don’t want to miss. Let’s meet you there.
Thanks for reading and we once more, wish you a merry xmas and a prosperous, rocky and blissful 2015. \m/
Check out for our next post on the Top Ten Nigerian Rock songs of 2014 and please feel free leave your comments of any song(s) you feel we left out or what you think of the list.

BRING BACK - PRODEGALOUS ft 1LA

There is another good news and music here for the rock heads in Nigeria. More bands and artist are popping out from every nook and cranny, with unique spice and flavour for our ears.

Prodegalous, new rock band recently joins the league of rock bands/artists to cook great rock songs for our listening pleasure.

Prodegalous is a Nigerian rock band formed in 2014, Surulere, Lagos. The band originally began as a solo project for Timothy Onanai Awanovwe, then into a band with the inclusion of Ini James on the guitar, backing vocals and Ghide okesola on the drums.

They released their new single titled "Bring Back". This song which was inspired by the missing 'Chibok girls' has a positive thought provoking lyrics, and the most decent drums delivery. And yes..! It features, no other than the on-demand post-hardcore band 1 Last Autograph..

Dont forget to drop your comments about the song . Thanks

Nigerian Rock music; whats the journey so far?

Compliment of the Season to every rock fan out there and the readers of NaijaRocksMusic. We want to use this medium to say a very big thank you for being with us through out 2013. We wont have gone this far without you. THANK YOU and ROCK ON! /m\

The year 2013 have been somewhat of an interesting one for the Nigerian rock fanatics with a handful of bands and artist becoming 'established' and seeing the game as a serious one. Secondly, we've seen an uncountable rock bands/artists wannabe (whom we are sincerely praying for, so they find their feet and get more serious with what they want) pop out from every angle. New and well produced songs with great vocals and lyrics have hit our ear drums with so much impetus, telling rock fans that its a business they wont be smiling with. The pop rock 'Dancing in the sun' by clay (you might confuse this one for katy perry), the wonderful acoustic ballad from Suyi Davies titled 'The Sky is Falling', another peice of art from the Queen of soft rock herself 'I'll Make you Dance', The RisingRain's 'Call me what you like', 'Twale' from the Christian Rock Artist FLO ROCKA and yeah 'Better Place' and 'Omote' crooner, from the Headies 2013 Nominee for Alternative Song, Ese Peters and lots more. The genre has come to stay and there is no going back, its growing at an angry pace, amassing a great and fearful number of audience. The bassist for The RisingRain said this in a little discussion we  had a couple of months back, "2013 was a stepping stone for many rock bands and artist in Nigeria, Better rock songs will hit Nigerian Airwaves in 2014,few rock concert was held, here and there and you know, they had a wonderful number of audience even with the doors closed, there will definitely be even more breath taking rock concerts and events in 2014" and there's do doubting that with so many artists to release new songs come 2014 and a rock karaoke event in Lagos already on the way with whispers and rumours of a valentine rock concert in Enugu.

A song comes to mind here at this point and i'll love to dedicate this song from 'The bad boys from Boston' to every rock fan in Nigeria. its 'Dream On' by the American band, Aerosmith.  We all did  a great  job with the supports we dashed out to the bands and artists, for its not an easy task to step up to the mic or pick up an instrument and the one genre that pops out of your head is ROCK, in Naija o? We have been very supportive, so lets keep  the dream alive and the torch burning for a 'Better Place'. ROCK ON! /m\

The Nigerian that wrote a hit song for The Beatles

Many years ago,a Nigerian artiste laid a complaint to an editor of sun that he wrote the song, "obla-di-obla-da...life goes on" for the Beatles but he was ripped off, meaning he was never given any credit for the song.
When we googled some few archives, the name Jimmy Scott-Emuakpor came up, he was a friend or an acquaintance of Paul McCartney who is credited to have given the phrase "ob-la-di, ob-la-da....life goes on" to the Beatles, In one interview, Paul McCartney confessed: "A fella who used to hang around the clubs used to say in Jamaican accent "ob-la-di, ob-la-da, life goes on". McCartney admitted picking the phrase from him and turning it around into an internal song. The tag line "ob-la-di, ob-la-da, life goes on, bra" was an expression used by Nigerian whom is a conga player. He later tried to claim a writer's credit for the use of his catch phrase in the song; McCartney claimed that the phrase was "just an  expression". Scott argued it was not a general expression, but merely an expression that was exclusively used in the Scott-Emuakpor family. Scott agreed to drop the case when McCartney agreed to pay Scott's legal expenses for an unrelated issue.
